Du<\/span>ring my stay in Ireland<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>I learned a lot about my ho<\/span>st family. I loved having a chat with them in the evening <\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>morning.<\/span> <\/span>They\u2019ve<\/span> <\/span>b<\/span>een living in their<\/span> <\/span>house for not to<\/span>o<\/span> <\/span>lon<\/span>g<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>which meant that there wasn\u2019t much<\/span> <\/span>interior <\/span>decoration,<\/span> <\/span>but they said that in Ireland<\/span> <\/span>there is this deal that you can live in a house for a year and then you can <\/span>decide if you want to buy it or not.<\/span> <\/span>Our host mum Sha<\/span>ron sadly got a throat infection not long after we<\/span> <\/span>arrived, <\/span>so we didn\u2019t see her<\/span> <\/span>often since she stayed in her room.<\/span> <\/span>Shauna<\/span>h<\/span> <\/span>told us about her younger sister<\/span> <\/span>and one day <\/span>her<\/span> <\/span>sister<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>puppy Archie stayed at our place<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>who Shauna<\/span>h<\/span> <\/span>had to<\/span> <\/span>dog sit<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Jake and Sha<\/span>una<\/span>h<\/span> <\/span>love animals and at <\/span>night<\/span> <\/span>they even go outside to feed the<\/span> <\/span>foxes<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The job<\/span> <\/span>interviews<\/span> <\/span>our host mum had on Thursday went well and <\/span>she<\/span> <\/span>started h<\/span>er<\/span> <\/span>first day<\/span> <\/span>at the bank<\/span> <\/span>on the Monday we left.<\/span> <\/span>O<\/span>ne evening Sharon heard H<\/span>uihui<\/span> <\/span>and me say a <\/span>German word<\/span> <\/span>since<\/span> <\/span>we forgot the English one and she asked us if<\/span> <\/span>we<\/span> <\/span>had<\/span> <\/span>just spoke<\/span>n<\/span> <\/span>German because she had <\/span>no<\/span> <\/span>i<\/span>dea<\/span> <\/span>what language people in Austria<\/span> <\/span>spea<\/span>k.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I try to adapt to new situations as quick<\/span>ly<\/span> <\/span>as possible to not cause any<\/span> <\/span>trouble,<\/span> <\/span>so I di<\/span>dn\u2019t have a lot of problems. <\/span>However<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>I am a ver<\/span>y shy person and at<\/span> <\/span>first,<\/span> <\/span>I was a bit scared to ask my host mum<\/span> <\/span>about taking a shower or <\/span>other stuff<\/span> <\/span>on<\/span> <\/span>the first day.<\/span> <\/span>Even<\/span>tually I got<\/span> <\/span>more confident<\/span> <\/span>every<\/span> <\/span>day,<\/span> <\/span>and I had a<\/span> <\/span>great<\/span> <\/span>time.<\/span> <\/span>I<\/span> <\/span>never got lost in <\/span>the city as I would say that<\/span> <\/span>I have a decent sense of orientation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Irish<\/span> <\/span>households are similar to ours at home but there are some<\/span> <\/span>differences, for example that in Ireland people <\/span>walk around<\/span> <\/span>their house in shoes. I don\u2019t even want to know how dir<\/span>ty those carpet floors were.<\/span> <\/span>The walls are <\/span>so<\/span> <\/span>thin<\/span> <\/span>that you could even hear someone<\/span> <\/span>coughin<\/span>g in another<\/span> <\/span>room,<\/span> <\/span>so I tried<\/span> <\/span>not to<\/span> <\/span>make a lot of noi<\/span>se<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>They <\/span>also put their heating on way later than we do and I<\/span> <\/span>was freezing every morning.<\/span> <\/span>And a<\/span>lso Jake called his mum <\/span>by<\/span> <\/span>her name and not \u201cMum\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>The<\/span> <\/span>people<\/span> <\/span>in Ireland<\/span> <\/span>are very<\/span> <\/span>friendly<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>but they<\/span> <\/span>are hardly<\/span> <\/span>ever on time<\/span>. Maybe it\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>because the public transport <\/span>is almost always late<\/span> <\/span>but thinking about the fact that they cross the street<\/span> <\/span>when the traffic lights are<\/span> <\/span>red,<\/span> <\/span>I<\/span> <\/span>don\u2019t <\/span>understand them.<\/span> <\/span>If you are in Ireland there is one th<\/span>ing you have to remember<\/span>; don\u2019t mention the British<\/span>, or at <\/span>least don\u2019t compare th<\/span>em to t<\/span>he Irish people<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>T<\/span>he British suppressed Ireland<\/span> <\/span>for a long time and<\/span> <\/span>when the <\/span>Republic of Ireland<\/span> <\/span>was finally formed there were st<\/span>ill fights in Northern Ireland.<\/span> <\/span>It is<\/span> <\/span>similar to Austrians not <\/span>likin<\/span>g the Germans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Irish ever<\/span>y<\/span>–<\/span>day<\/span>–<\/span>life<\/span> <\/span>is n<\/span>ot exactly<\/span> <\/span>like ours<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>so here are some differences I noti<\/span>ced. School starts later<\/span> <\/span>for the Irish <\/span>students and even<\/span> <\/span>if it\u2019s not that much later<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>our host mum told<\/span> <\/span>us that it used to start at nine when she still <\/span>went to school.<\/span> <\/span>There are hardly any schools in which you don<\/span>\u2019t have to wear a school uniform and another <\/span>thing<\/span> <\/span>is that in Ireland you have to drive on the left.<\/span> <\/span>Something<\/span> <\/span>that had a really bad consequence on our trip to <\/span>Galway<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>is that<\/span> <\/span>you don\u2019t have to get your car checked every year<\/span>, which means that you can d<\/span>rive in it until it <\/span>falls apart.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>I<\/span>f there is one thing I learned about food in Ireland<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>it is<\/span> <\/span>that the<\/span> <\/span>Irish<\/span> <\/span>lo<\/span>ve potatoes.<\/span> <\/span>Fries,<\/span> <\/span>c<\/span>hips<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>m<\/span>ashed <\/span>p<\/span>otatoes<\/span>, baked potato<\/span>es<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>p<\/span>ot<\/span>ato stew are<\/span> <\/span>some<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>many dishes<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Unlike<\/span> <\/span>my home they have dinner as their <\/span>main meal of the day<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>whereas I<\/span> <\/span>eat my main meal for lunch most<\/span> <\/span>of the time.<\/span> <\/span>When<\/span> <\/span>you ask f<\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>tea,<\/span> <\/span>you are not <\/span>going<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>be offered<\/span> <\/span>all kinds of green<\/span>–<\/span>, h<\/span>erbal<\/span>–<\/span>, fruit<\/span>–<\/span> <\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>spice<\/span> <\/span>tea but just a pla<\/span>in and bitter black tea with mi<\/span>lk <\/span>and sugar.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>Shopping in Ireland isn\u2019<\/span>t much different th<\/span>a<\/span>n here but after you get the<\/span> <\/span>receipt you will notice a slight difference <\/span>which is that very<\/span> <\/span>often the price gets rounded.<\/span> <\/span>Let\u2019s assume a product cost<\/span>s 19,99<\/span>\u20ac<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>then you would have to pay <\/span>20\u20ac<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Another thing<\/span> <\/span>I\u2019ve noticed is that ice c<\/span>ream<\/span> <\/span>i<\/span>s way more expensive in Ireland th<\/span>a<\/span>n it i<\/span>s in Austria.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span>Acoustically<\/span> <\/span>I understood most of the language but there w<\/span>ere some words<\/span> <\/span>I didn\u2019t know or I didn\u2019t know the <\/span>exact meaning of<\/span> <\/span>but all in all I<\/span> <\/span>never struggled to communicate with the Ir<\/span>ish.<\/span> <\/span>I love<\/span> <\/span>to learn new vocabulary <\/span>and going to Ireland was a<\/span> <\/span>great opportunity to learn some new words.<\/span> <\/span>The only problem I have is my German <\/span>accent,<\/span> <\/span>but I<\/span> <\/span>also don\u2019t want to use<\/span> <\/span>a different<\/span> <\/span>one because<\/span> <\/span>it feels<\/span> <\/span>disrespectful,<\/span> <\/span>and I al<\/span>ways have the feeling <\/span>that I\u2019m<\/span> <\/span>mocking someone even if that is not my intention.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>I didn\u2019t have<\/span> <\/span>lots of<\/span> <\/span>specific<\/span> <\/span>expectations before our trip but some fears. My sister told me all these sto<\/span>ries about <\/span>her host<\/span> <\/span>family,<\/span> <\/span>and I was afraid that<\/span> <\/span>my host family wouldn\u2019t be nice<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>however<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>I was pos<\/span>itively surprised<\/span> <\/span>to <\/span>have such a nice and welcoming one.<\/span> <\/span>One thing I did not expect was<\/span> <\/span>the weather to be so nice<\/span>. T<\/span>here was one <\/span>rainy day,<\/span> <\/span>wh<\/span>ich<\/span> <\/span>is nothing<\/span> <\/span>compared<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span> <\/span>what<\/span> <\/span>Ireland normally is<\/span> <\/span>like<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>I now<\/span> <\/span>know a lot more about Ireland<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>for exampl<\/span>e that<\/span> <\/span>there are<\/span> <\/span>26<\/span> <\/span>counties<\/span> <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>the Republic of Ireland and six <\/span>in<\/span> <\/span>Northern Ireland. Even though Ireland is very f<\/span>lat<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>c<\/span>liffs look so spectacular<\/span> <\/span>and overall<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>Ireland has a <\/span>beautiful<\/span> <\/span>vegetation<\/span> <\/span>with a lot of green and even palm trees.<\/span> <\/span>This country is truly<\/span> <\/span>stunning,<\/span> <\/span>an<\/span>d I would love to <\/span>visit it again sometime.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
